NDIA 2017 Joint Service Power Expo will be held May 2-4, 2017 at Virginia Beach, VA. Consider attending this important event, which is focused on applications and users and is the main DoD- and Government-oriented portable power conference this year. Advanced Battery Industry News
Suzuki entered into a joint venture (JV) with Toshiba and Denso to form a lithium ion (li-ion) battery manufacturing company in India. The JV will be capitalized at 2 billion yen ($18.4 million). Suzuki will contribute 50% of the amount with Toshiba at 40% and Denso at 10%. Construction of the plant will take up to two years. (Source: Nikkei Asian Review)
Connexxion (Dutch-based) has placed an order with VDL Bus & Coach for no fewer than 100 Citeas SLFA Electric. The order for the vehicles will enable Connexxion to have the largest ebus fleet in Europe. The order also includes 18 VDL Futuras FDD2 doubledeckers. All the ebuses are destined for the Amstelland-Meerlanden concession in the province of North Holland. (Source: VDL Bus & Coach)
BYD is planning to add another electric bus (ebus) plant in Europe. The company expects to sell 300 ebuses in Europe this year. BYD is targeting to gain about a third of the European bus and coach market in five years, or about 11,000 units of vehicles. (Source: Bloomberg)
Volvo is planning to produce electric cars (EVs) in China for sales worldwide beginning in 2019. The battery powered EV will be based on the platform it shares with Geely. Volvo has three factories in China. In 2015, it became the first automaker to export Chinese-made cars to the United States. (Source: Associated Press)
Volkswagen is planning to launch its first battery powered EV in China next year. The company’s model will be the first in a range of EVs in China. It is will be produced under a brand name with a local partner, state-owned Jianghuai Automotive. (Source: ABC News)
NIO has unveiled the ES8 for the China market that is planned for serial production later this year. The EV will be equipped with a swappable battery. The ES8’s official launch will take place at the end of this year, with deliveries expected to begin next year. (Source: NIO)
Honda Motor is planning to launch a battery-powered EV car in China next year with plug-in hybrid models to follow afterwards. The automaker is “expediting” the development of the EV. Honda plans to roll out its all-electric Clarity in the U.S. in 2017 that will have a range of 80 miles per charge. (Source: Reuters)
Aqua Metals announced it has acquired Ebonex IPR for 123,776 shares of Aqua Metals common stock and $100,000 in cash. Ebonex has developed patented technology in the field of advanced materials and manufacturing methods for advanced lead acid batteries. The company’s advanced materials have the potential to increase lead acid energy density, cycle life and faster charging. (Source: Aqua Metals)
LG Chem has launched residential battery systems in the North American market that will be available via solar/storage providers in North America. The residential battery range offers AC- and DC-coupled solutions with capacities up to 9.8 kilowatt hours (kWh). (Source: LG Chem)
SolarQ is planning to build a 350 megawatt (MW) solar plant combined with 4,000 MWh of li-ion battery storage in the Gympie Region of Queensland, Australia. The company has submitted a council development application for the over AU$2 billion ($1.5 billion) proposal. SolarQ is already working with a tier one storage provider. redT will deliver a 1.08 MWh energy storage project to support the distributed energy system in Cornwall, England. The company has signed an agreement with The Olde House to supply six of its energy storage solutions originally destined for a Scottish wind project. (Source: redT)
An energy-storage battery will be placed in East Hampton, Long Island and will also serve as the receiving station for the South Fork wind farm. The battery and another planned for Southampton will be owned and operated by a 50-50 National Grid and NextEra Energy JV called ‘Long Island Energy Storage Holdings’. The East Hampton battery will have a 5 MW capacity and provide up to 40 MWh of energy to the grid and is expected to be ready by 2018. (Source: Newsday)
BYD has delivered three K9S ebuses to Howard County Transit, a division of the Regional Transit Authority of Central Maryland. The vehicles have a range of 161 miles on a single charge. The ebuses can be charged through a combination of inductive and plug-in charging. (Source: NGT News)
