The Challenge

The challenge of electrochemical energy storage technology is a challenge that does not know national boundaries.  Promoting that technology and helping it move more rapidly into commerce is NAATBatt International’s mission today.

In 2008, at the suggestion of then Senator Barack Obama, Jim Greenberger, Jeff Chamberlain, Ralph Brodd and Carlos Helou founded the National Alliance for Advanced Transportation Batteries (“NAATBatt”). The goal of NAATBatt was to create an R&D consortium of companies to promote the manufacture of lithium-ion and other advanced batteries in the United States. Based on SEMATECH in the semiconductor industry, NAATBatt’s mission was to ensure that as automobile drive trains electrified, the United States vehicle fleet did not trade dependence on foreign petroleum for dependence on foreign batteries. By the end of 2008, NAATBatt had 52 corporate members.

In 2009, NAATBatt revised its mission and reincorporated as a Section 501(c)(6) trade association.  NAATBatt International, a descendant of the original NAATBatt, exists today for the purpose of promoting the interests of companies working to commercialize advanced electrochemical energy storage technology in high tech applications worldwide.

Advanced electrochemical energy storage is the most important technology challenge of our time.   Progress in key technologies that will shape human society in the 21st Century, from vehicles to the Smart Grid, to robotics, consumer electronics, medical devices, weapons systems, monitoring systems and more, depends in large part on being able to store more and more electric energy in less and less mass.

The challenge of electrochemical energy storage technology is a challenge that does not know national boundaries.  Promoting that technology and helping it move more rapidly into commerce is NAATBatt International’s mission today.

To promote the commercial interests of our members by supporting developments in the science of and markets for advanced electrochemical energy storage technology in North America consistent with the goals of enhancing energy efficiency, reducing petroleum dependence and enabling carbon-free electricity generation.

Specific Objectives

  • To promote job creation and intellectual property development in the advanced battery industry in North America.
  • To interface with and promote collaboration among industry groups focused on advanced battery technology outside of North America, including China, Europe, Japan and Korea.
  • To build relationships among companies engaged in advanced electrochemical energy storage in order to enhance commercial opportunities for our members.
  • To accelerate commercialization of emerging electrochemical energy storage technology by facilitating greater collaboration among private industry, research institutions and government laboratories in North America.
  • To integrate electricity storage into the ecosystem of the power system in North America.
  • To educate industry, consumers and financial markets about advanced electrochemical energy storage technology and its benefits.
  • To advocate for public policies that increase market demand for vehicles and systems incorporating advanced electrochemical energy storage technology.
  • To promote the recycling of and development of aftermarkets for advanced batteries and electrochemical energy storage systems in North America.

Each week, NAATBatt publishes its weekly newsletter called the “Advanced Battery Weekly”. The NAATBatt newsletter summarizes in abbreviated form the major commercial develops in the industry over the past week with an emphasis on developments at and accomplishments by NAATBatt member firms. The newsletter is a “must read” publication in the advanced battery industry and averages more than 1,400 opens each week. As a benefit of membership, NAATBatt member firms are entitled to free advertising in the newsletter and to republish press releases about their accomplishments. The NAATBatt Advanced Battery Weekly helps NAATBatt members build name recognition and enhance their visibility in the industry.
